Young Design of 1820: Biedermeier. The Invention of Simplicity

The Albertina exhibition hall presents an exhibition “Young Design of 1820: Biedermeier. The Invention of Simplicity” which is on display from February 2nd till May 13th. The exhibition is dedicated to modern art of the time around 1820, which is expressed in 450 works of art that at the same time can be used as everyday objects: those are not only graphic arts and paintings but also items of furniture and more. All of these works express the basic ideas of the Biedermeier era, which made a great impact on art and design of not only the past period, but also present day time. These works were commissioned to the Albertina by Archduke Charles, who moved here in 1820. The exhibits come from nearly 100 lenders and tell us the history of modernity with its roots coming from the Europe's major princely courts. Among the main lenders there are Danske Kunstindustrimuseet Kopenhagen, Museum für Angewandte Kunst Prag, die Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten Berlin-Brandenburg Potsdam as well as the Vienna Hofmobiliendepot.
