Kaiserball at the Hofburg Palace

For Vienna, December 31st means not only the New Year’s time, but also the time for traditional balls. One of the first balls that opens the season is the Kaiserball (Imperial Ball) at the Hofburg Palace. The ball starts with changing of the guard at the entrance hall and is then followed by the performance of Hofball Orchestra while the guests have a chance to greet Empress Sisi and Emperor Franz Josef. Then, of course, dancing starts that is interrupted by the ringing of the Pummerin (the bell from St Stephan's Cathedral) heralds, after which the Emperors wish everyone happy New Year. After midnight, it is a good idea to visit such events as Viennese Operetta Gala at the Grand Festival Halland music and dancing performances at the Vienna State Opera and the Volksopera. And, of course, you can enjoy delicious food in a number of locations. But don’t forget that as it’s the ball, you should dress accordingly.
